EARL KATHAN, GUNSMITH
GUN REPAIR FOR GOOD OLD GUNS
The blunderbuss was a close range weapon of the day and was believed to have been a ship's musket used as a boarding weapon. It was also a short version of muskets used by the cavalry and in later years it was a means of defense against highwaymen.
Typically the blunderbuss had a barrel length of under two feet with a distinctive flared muzzle. Some blunderbuss were equipped with a spring bayonet attached to the top side of the barrel for close combat after the charge.
By the mid 19th century the blunderbuss was pretty much obsolete but is used today as a favorite weapon of pirate reenactors and others who enjoy the charm of this effective early flintlock.
